The Pool of Fire by John Christopher5/23/2023 ![]() ![]() In the previous bk, Will had escaped from the City of Gold and Lead & was now back at the place where the rebels were living & organizing. It wd've been interesting to read about the rebellion happening without top-down leadership. Common sense as well as justice demands this."" - pp 7-8Īn anarchist in the midst of those rebellious humans! Good for him, I say. All free men are equal, and must be given the rights of equality. There are others who are not lacking in wisdom. It is not only you and your Councilors who can plan how to defeat the Tripods. ![]() You should rather come to us asking than ordering. I would remind you, Julius: it is not Capped men you are talking to, but free. You talk of parts to play, of men being told what they must do. ![]() ""You talk of the Council coming to us with its plans. This review cd be called "Review Lite" b/c I have almost nothing to say about the bk - not because I didn't enjoy it, I did enjoy it, but, perhaps, b/c it was a 'classic' reading experience for me where I just breezed thru the story & then it was done. This is the last bk in the Tripods Trilogy (except for a prequel that was published as a sequel 20 yrs later) that I've already reviewed the 1st 2 bks of: The White Mountains: The City of Gold and Lead. Seduced in the dark5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() This modern take tries to "subtly upend the Madonna-whore trope that's in the original movie, where there's this lovely housewife, homemaker, and then this sex-crazed psycho bunny boiler," Peet said in an interview with CBC News.Ī mainstay of 1980s and '90s cinema, the erotic thriller wave spawned movies such as Body Heat, Indecent Proposal, Disclosure, Basic Instinct, Showgirls and Dressed To Kill - typically nail-biters with an illicit or romantic affair at their centre. But our conception of sexual politics and power dynamics have shifted drastically since those days. But this depiction conveys more empathy for its femme fatale Alex and harsher consequences for its male protagonist, Dan. The limited series reimagines the steamy-scary 1987 hit, in which a married man and his family are tormented by a troubled woman after a one-night stand. ![]() Amanda Peet knew making an erotic thriller in 2023 would be complicated when she accepted a role in the television adaptation of Fatal Attraction. ![]()

Gumshoe America by Sean McCann5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() He then examines how Raymond Chandler’s fiction, unlike Hammett’s, idealized sentimental fraternity, echoing the communitarian appeals of the late New Deal. ![]() Turning his focus to Dashiell Hammett’s career, McCann shows how Hammett’s writings in the late 1920s and early 1930s moved detective fiction away from its founding fables of social compact to the cultural alienation triggered by a burgeoning administrative state. Beginning by using a forum on the KKK in the pulp magazine Black Mask to describe both the economic and political culture of pulp fiction in the early twenties, McCann locates the origins of the hard-boiled crime story in the genre’s conflict with the racist antiliberalism prominent at the time. Gumshoe America traces the way those problems surfaced in hard-boiled crimeįiction from the1920s through the 1960s. For these authors, the same contradictions inherent in liberal democracy were present within the changing literary marketplace of the mid-twentieth-century United the competing claims of the elite versus the popular, the demands of market capitalism versus conceptions of quality, and the individual versus a homogenized society. Illuminating a previously unnoticed set of concerns at the heart of the fiction, he contends that mid-twentieth-century American crime writers used the genre to confront and wrestle with many of the paradoxes and disappointments of New Deal liberalism. In Gumshoe America Sean McCann offers a bold new account of the hard-boiled crime story and its literary and political significance. ![]()

Parmenides platon5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() Employing his customary method of attack, the reductio ad absurdum, Zeno has argued that if as the pluralists say things are many, then they will be both like and unlike but this is an impossible situation, for unlike things cannot be like, nor like things unlike. The heart of the dialogue opens with a challenge by Socrates to the elder and revered Parmenides and Zeno. Most scholars agree that the dialogue does not record historic conversations, and is most likely an invention by Plato. It is also notable that he takes the position of the student here while Parmenides serves as the lecturer. This dialogue is chronologically the earliest of all as Socrates is only nineteen years old here. The dialogue is set during a supposed meeting between Parmenides and Zeno of Elea in Socrates' hometown of Athens. The occasion of the meeting was the reading by Zeno of his treatise defending Parmenidean monism against those partisans of plurality who asserted that Parmenides' supposition that there is a one gives rise to intolerable absurdities and contradictions. The Parmenides purports to be an account of a meeting between the two great philosophers of the Eleatic school, Parmenides and Zeno of Elea, and a young Socrates. ![]() It is widely considered to be one of the most challenging and enigmatic of Plato's dialogues. ![]() Parmenides ( Greek: Παρμενίδης) is one of the dialogues of Plato. The best of cl moore5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() In these ten stories published from 1933 to 1946 in such magazines as Weird Tales, Famous Fantastic Mysteries, and Astounding Science Fiction, Moore displays her broad interest and particular style. Moore was one of the pioneers of women's science fiction writing. After all these years, "The Tree of Life" remains a great read, and excellent introduction to the works of Catherine, or C. It wasn\'t until fans dug up the obituary of James Tiptree Jr.\'s mother that "he" was identified as Alice Sheldon. Most notable female science fiction authors either used initials or gender-neutral pseudonyms, for a good many years after that era. Going by her initials was largely a practical matter at the time Catherine Moore was writing, there was a strong prejudice that science fiction writing should be masculine, and female authors had a very difficult time getting an audience. ![]() The two became acquainted after Kuttner wrote her a letter, thinking (due to her pen name) that she was a man.
